FCT #14: leaving (the coast)

Ah, poor neglected Cha Cha. Too much focus on fun and not enough on capturing the fun. I'm gonna attempt some backtracking over the next week or so, in order to fill in a few holes. I'm also gonna attempt to get through a zillion assessments and not squander thousands of dollars in uni fees due to general distraction. So advance apologies if the next couple of weeks are sporadic in nature!

There’s a flurry of leaving and arriving going on right now. Not a great deal of focus on Canberra itself, but I think that’s a good thing. Larger forces are at play and I feel as though I’m building a sense of home that isn’t contingent on physical space.

Physical spaces can’t be overlooked though – not while they exist to be explored with a heart full of awe and wonder.

Easter found me in the sublime space of Mimosa Rocks National Park, camping at Aragunnu. It’s been one of Adi’s favourite places for years and years, so I felt blessed to share in its glories with her. I also felt blessed to be tackling my first camping trip in a zillion years with good, rugged, outdoors types. Adi and Ben are healthy living poster children. They’re campers and hikers extraordinaire. They even met atop a snow-peaked mountain! How’s that for a love that was meant to be?!

Their fine company was supplemented by Adi's old mate Josie and her hubbie Andrew, who rocked up in a cool 80s campervan decked out with everything one could possibly need for a spot of camping. Red wine and choc chip bikkies for instance. The kidlets topped it off, with Noah, Leo and Mr N also in attendance. We did a lot more singing as a result. And we were kept well entertained by Leo's dolphin-laugh, as beautifully depicted by Adi here.

It was a treat to bring Mr N along for fun, eight-year-old styley. It’s the most independent big-sis-+-little-bro time we’ve had together and it was a roaring success. He’s such a good kid. Politeness and sunshiney smiles to an almost ridiculous extent. I asked him if he wanted a treat during one of our stop-offs and he said that he was happy with the bottle of water in the car. I mean seriously, your big sis is offering you anything you want and you go for warm, stale water? Where does that kid get it from?!? As AZ commented, at his age I would have been making myself sick on fizzy drink if I had the chance! I've got such a lotta lotta love for my little man.

In spite of my immense camping trepidation – Will I freeze? Will I get eaten by possums? Just how stinky will the pit toilets be? – it was a gorgeous, gorgeous coupla days. We basked in the sunshine, swam and strolled, fished, toasted marshmallows, sang songs, practiced our creative swearing, slept to the sounds of the sea, hunted eggs, ate corn chowder and drank scotch, soaked up smoky mornings in a lush green grove. And I rolled back out on that dirt road thinking "When can I do that again?"

FCT #17: joyce's homemade lamingtons

Oh happy day. Old friends, new(ish) bubs and freshly baked lamingtons. So so lovely to see Bec and Joel on Friday, and to meet Addie at last. Another beautiful, bouncing babe! What clever friends I have!

It’s always a delight to see Bec’s folks, Joyce and Jock, too. And Joyce’s lamingtons were just as Bec had promised – utterly scrummy.

FCT #14: leaving (melbournio)

I think you'll agree that I've been going strong on Canberra Positivity. It did require one stern talking to from Lulu on the fact that I chose to move here, but I've spun almost three-sixty on the Can since I arrived at the end of January. No major whinges, no petty gripes, no harping on, just sunshine and light and autumn leaves.

As I know from my many previous incarnations, once I choose to move I then have to choose my attitude. It's the attitude that determines the experience. And I'm very pleased to say that it's been a bloody good experience so far. I'm in a happy place, I'm doing something I love, I'm learning truckloads, I've met a heap of decent peeps, I feel free of baggage... well... perhaps there's a little light carry-on... and I've crossed paths, albeit briefly, with someone who moved me in ways that I haven't been moved in a loooong time. Oi! Get your filthy minds out of the gutter!

Sometimes, in order to love somebody, you gotta set them free. (Free free, set them free.) Or so Sting would have us believe. An important part of loving the Can is setting it free. On a regular basis. (Free free, set it free.) So rather than introducing an element of Canberra Negativity, let's just say that I enjoyed setting the Can free for the weekend.

It was a delight to return to Melbournio. To stomp the old stomping ground, hang wit my girls, witness the parallel hair explosions of Ben and Leo, marvel at how Adi becomes a yummier mummy every time I see her, eat at the Vegie Bar, drink way too much awesome coffee, get a little drunk, blow my budget (as per usual) at Polyester, enjoy the latest 'story show' from one of my superheroes, and see a stack of awesome comedy.

--------------------------
Momentary fantasy tangent...
If I were Queen Of The World, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival would never ever end and I would only stop laughing in order to eat, pee and practice side-split preventing stretches. Oh, and Daniel Kitson would murmur poignant, poetic, melancholy and hilarious murmurings to me each night as I slipped into sleep. Quite possibly attired only in his underpants.
--------------------------

The only problem with ace weekends away is that they must, inevitably, come to an end. And end it has. Ooooh woooe, post-holiday blues. Empty house, empty fridge, empty heart. What's a girl to do? If you've got any post-holiday pick-me-ups please do get in touch.

And stay tuned for the return of Canberra Positivity.

FCT #7: scones amongst the roses

Poor lonely little blog. I'm not finding much time to write but am hardly surprising myself, given everything that's going on right now. The last nine-ish days have been huge. Huuuuuuuuge week - getting the perfect new job, starting my first pre-service teaching placement, bashing out three assessments. Even huuuuuuuuger weekend - time with my gorgeous girls Gin and Smokey, about ten Favourite Canberra Things achieved but in no way documented, a little bitta lovin, a little bitta emotional fallout, roller derby madness, much-needed hugs.

I've been in recovery mode for the last two days. Trying to pare it all back again. Getting back on the study horse one textbook chapter at a time. Finding moments of sanity in cleaning the bathroom and writing up placement notes. Practicing choir parts at the top of my lungs. Finding my feet and sucking my muscles towards my bones at yoga.

(Deep breath in. Deep breath out.)

Jo brought a batch of fresh scones to uni today, and we ate them in the rose garden with Alissa's homemade rhubarb and apple jam. We had spent two hours grappling with maths, aided by our wonderful teacher and her unifix blocks. And then there we were amongst the roses, the sun peeking out from behind the clouds at last. Sunshine, scones and solidarity. There was no avoiding the most obvious of thoughts: I am so fucking lucky.

FCT #4: extra holidays

Tomorrow is Canberra Day and that lovely long weekend feeling is all around. As far as I can tell, Canberra Day has been bestowed upon Canberrans so that they can celebrate living in a town which has been bestowed upon with extra holidays. And hey, who's complaining? Definitely not me, now that I'm here to enjoy the bestowment.

And there's so much to enjoy...

Pasta and vino rosso with my new friend AZ on Friday night. I love the way different friendships open up different sides of ourselves. With AZ it's poetry, philosophy, spirituality, music. Stuff that doesn't often find its way into conversation. Special treat stuff.

Yesterday Slim and K and I dipped into You Are Here, a local arts festival that has just kicked off and is running for the next week or so. Slim's mate Rob has created a cool project called Art-Is-An Bread where punters swap stuff for bread. Delicious sourdough bread. Delicious sourdough bread which we slathered with other (edible) stuff and thoroughly enjoyed. But before eating bread we chucked some ideas at Sexy New Urban Design Team Canberra. Their fun, interactive concept sees the city centre - or at least its crafty likeness - reconfigured and reimagined by punters. Our dreams were turned into cardboard+pipecleaner reality right before our very eyes. My dream involved improved equity for the elephants at the zoo. I may dream some new dreams before the week is through... and I will definitely be back for more bread.

Yesternight a suitor and I double-dipped into You Are Here with a not-quite-successful experimental theatre piece and a delicious dinner at a fancy-pants restaurant. You know those dishes that look too pretty to eat? A swirl of puy lentils here, a gem of potatoey goodness there, a fan of baby artichoke, a dollop of something garlicky, a perfect lamb cutlet. Pretty yumminess. It was a good night filled with more special treat conversation. I've already met some smart people here and that makes me feel lucky!

In other news...

--I started learning to play the guitar last Monday. Smoke on the Water. Yeah.

--I earned me some brownie points by re-oiling ma's back deck. I had forgotten how satisfying DIY can be. No... not that kind of DIY. Gawd you have a dirty mind.

--A family of king parrots have taken up residence in the tree outside my bedroom window. They hang out for most of the day, chattering and cracking into seedpods. They make great company and they're beautiful!

--I broke my buying-da-music-ban for Alex Ebert's solo debut, Alexander. I've missed the whole Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros phenomenon but from what I can tell Ebert is the love-child of Dylan and Devendra Banhart. Y'all know how much I dig freak folk and I've definitely fallen in love with Ebert's single. How could I not? It's got whistling.

the truth is that I haven't shook my shadow
and everyday it's tryin to trick me into doing battle
calling out 'faker' wanna get me rattled
wanna put me back behind the fence with the cattle
building your lenses digging your trenches
put me on the front line leave me with a dumb mind with no defences
but your defence is 'if you can't stand to feel the pain then you are senseless'
since this I've grown up some different kinda fighter
and when the darkness comes let it INSIDE YOU

and your darkness is shining
my darkness is shining
have faith in ourselves
